Barite introduction

Barite is most commonly coarse grained; it also occurs as platy crystals or fine-grained compact masses that may be white, light yellow, light grey, brown, pink, or blue. When pure, barite contains up to 58.8% barium, the balance being mainly sulphate, or carbonate. Although heavy, it is soft with a hardness of 2.5 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale. Some barite deposits may be classified as hard or soft depending on the ease with which the mineral may be ground. Although barite contains a heavy metal (barium), it is not a toxic chemical since it is relatively insoluble in water and acid, and therefore can be used as a chemically inert material.
